Emergency Medical Technician Certificate (B312)


Program Purpose:
To prepare students for the State of Florida’s Examination for Emergency Medical Technician and/or the National Registry EMT (NREMT) and for employment as certified emergency medical technicians (EMT) who are equipped to work as part of an emergency medical team. This program also provides the first level of educational preparation for students seeking to become registered paramedics.

This program is approved by the State of Florida Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.

Employment Types:
Certified emergency medical technicians (EMTs) are employed by emergency care providers, ambulance companies, hospitals and other settings.

Program Length:
11 credit hours; one semester

Admission Requirements:

Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and meet all admission requirements of the College.

Applicants must be college-ready in English and Reading which means the applicant does not need developmental education courses in English and Reading. The applicant must be eligible for at least the level 2 developmental math. This requirement may be satisfied by one or more of the following options: the Florida Statute on Developmental Education exemption, adequate placement scores from the Florida Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (PERT) or other college placement scores accepted by TCC, completion of developmental education courses or completion of at least ENC 1101 College Composition and level 1 developmental math.
Applicants must have also completed one of the following:

• Approved college-level first aid course (

• Approved first responder course ( )
• American Red Cross Emergency Medical Responder Certificate

Applicants must hold current American Heart Association Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider or American Red Cross CPR for the Healthcare Provider and Professional Rescuer certification. (One of these two hands-on courses is required; online courses are not acceptable.)

At a scheduled time, applicants will have to demonstrate an ability to lift 125 pounds, successfully complete a course readiness test and complete an interview. All students participating in this program must pass all clinical affiliates’ requirements for criminal background checks, drug screenings and health/immunizations before starting classes.
