Additional Healthcare Program Requirements


All healthcare programs (degrees and certificates) are limited access and limited enrollment. This means that there are specific admission requirements, including a special application for each program. There is also a designated number of students accepted for each entry and each program. There is not a waiting list for any of the programs. A list of all programs can be found on the website at www.tcc.fl.edu/healthcare.

Information that includes the admission requirements can be obtained from each program’s webpage.

Students enrolled in any healthcare program will be required to fulfill graduation requirements specified in the catalog for the year in which they began the core curriculum. Students that withdraw or exit a program and are allowed to return to the program must fulfill all requirements in place at the time of their return to the program.

Courses that assign a grade of A, B, C, D or F must be completed with a grade of C or better. Courses that assign a grade of pass or fail must be completed with a pass. Courses that assign a grade of satisfactory or unsatisfactory must be completed with a satisfactory. Students that do not meet these standards will not be allowed to progress to the next semester and will be dismissed from the program. Re-entry will be contingent upon program policy and space availability.

Attendance is mandatory in all classes, labs and clinical experiences. Times may vary and days, evenings and weekends will be used.

Additional requirements will be completed after acceptance into the programs, unless the requirement is part of the admission process. These requirements include, but are not limited to, CPR certification, immunizations and other health screenings, criminal background checks, and drug screening.

CPR certification must be one of the following: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider or American Red Cross CPR for the Healthcare Provider and Professional Rescuer. No other courses will be accepted. The course must have a hands-on component and not just an online version.

Criminal background checks and drug screening are required of students by most of the clinical agencies. Students will complete these prior to acceptance into their program, using the services of the College’s contracting agency. All results are submitted to the agencies requiring these items and they determine if the student may participate in clinical activities in their agency. If the agency determines a student cannot attend clinical experiences at their agency, the student will not be allowed to continue in the program. Successful completion of all required clinical experiences is required for successful completion of all programs. Additionally, the cost of the background check and drug screening is the responsibility of the student, and no refunds will be issued.

Students with positive background checks that are allowed to continue in the program cannot be guaranteed that this will not impact licensure/certification eligibility and/or employment opportunities. Students need to be aware of the state statutes for licensure/certification. The Florida Statutes are on the Florida Department of Health website, www.doh.state.fl.us/mqa/laws.html.

Students are responsible for all costs of the program, which may include, but are not limited to, tuition, fees, books, criminal background checks, drug screening, immunizations, CPR certification, uniforms, supplies, instruments, and licensure or certification exams. Students must have reliable transportation for clinical experiences in Tallahassee and the surrounding communities.

Students may choose to be employed while in the programs. However, all employment must be scheduled around the class, lab and clinical schedules of the program. Past experiences have shown that most students attempting to work more than 20 hours per week are not successful in the program due to lack of study time.

Students may request to transfer into a TCC healthcare program from the same discipline at another college/university. However, it is very difficult to do so owing to differences in curriculum and space availability. All of the following requirements and conditions must be met in order to be considered for transfer admission.

  • Completion of a general Tallahassee Community College admission application (www.tcc.fl.edu/apply) and all college admission requirements.
  • Completion all admission requirements for the specific program of study, including a specific application for the healthcare program, which applicants may access on the TCC website at www.tcc.fl.edu/healthcare.
  • Submission of a letter stating the reason(s) for transfer and anticipated date of entry into the TCC healthcare program.
  • Submission of a copy of transcript(s) to the TCC healthcare program.
  • Submission of a syllabus from each healthcare course completed or currently enrolled in, to include course learning outcomes, course schedule, and all related lab and clinical activities. No fax or email will be accepted.
  • Submission of a letter from the dean or director of the current or former program stating that the student left in good academic and clinical standing and that the student meets the eligibility requirements to remain or return to that program.
  • Complete any testing required at the discretion of the chair of the healthcare program.
  • Transfer must occur within one year of leaving the former program.
  • Transfer into the last semester of the program is not permitted.
  • Twenty-five percent (25%) of all coursework must be completed at TCC.
  • Space must be available for the student in the semester of transfer and in specified courses
  • Transfer is contingent upon successful submission and verification of criminal background checks, negative drug screening, completion of all health requirements and CPR certification.
